Bunche attended Fisk University at the age of fourteen and went on to earn his doctorate at the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Army during World War II. When he was thirty-three years old, he became the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Later he would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President John F. Kennedy and receive an honorary doctorate from Yale University along with visits from other presidents, including Jimmy Carter. Today he is considered one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century American history.
